🇳🇴 #2 Norway Series: Best Apps, Tips on What to Pack, How to Stay Safe and Get Around

Alright, now that we’ve covered Norway’s best ski-touring spots (catch up in our last email if you missed it!), let’s dive into the real essentials—practical tips, best apps, gear guides, and ways to get around. 🚠

I’ve put together a newsletter that’s basically my personal cheat sheet to the scene. Think insider tips you won’t find anywhere else! 😉

📲 Best Apps To Use For Checking..

❄️ Avalanche Bulletin- Varsom Regobs

  • Why You Need It: Get real-time avalanche forecasts and snow conditions to stay safe.
  • Cost: Free on iOS and Android.

🗺 Maps- Varsom and Norgeskart (⭐️ best choice).

  • Why You Need It: Varsom provides hazard warnings and offline maps, while Norgeskart offers detailed, ad-free maps with GPS navigation.
  • Cost: Free on iOS and Android.

🌤️ Weather conditions- Yr.no and SeNorge

  • Why You Need It: Stay updated with fast-changing weather using accurate forecasts.
  • Cost: Free on iOS and Android for Yr.no; SeNorge is web-only.

👜 Okay, Okay.. But What Should I Pack?

⛷️ Gear Essentials

  • Freeride Skis & Bindings: Go for wider skis (100mm+ underfoot) and sturdy bindings for better float and control in powder.
  • Poles: Adjustable ski poles with powder baskets are a must for deep snow.
  • Avalanche Safety Kit: Don’t forget your beacon, shovel, and probe—know how to use them! Check an avalanche course or watch videos online!
  • Crampons & Ice Axe: Handy for steep climbs and icy spots.

👜 Clothing Tips

  • Layer Up: Expect cold temps (-5°C to -15°C). Bring moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer. Pack heavy gloves and a balaclava for wind protection.
  • Tour Mid-Morning: It’s usually warmer then, and the snow softens nicely, making for better skiing.

💡 Additional Items

  • Navigation Tools: A physical map and compass are great backups to your apps.
  • Headlamp: Essential for those early starts or late returns.
  • Snacks & Thermos: High-calorie snacks and hot drinks will keep you fueled in the cold.

✈️ ..And How Do I Get There?

🛩 You have several airport options to kick off your ski adventure.

  • Oslo (OSL) is perfect for reaching Southern Norway and making connections throughout the country.
  • If you're heading to the Lyngen Alps, Tromsø (TOS) is your best bet.
  • For the Sunnmøre Alps and Møre og Romsdal region, opt for Ålesund (AES).
  • For Lofoten Islands, fly into Harstad/Narvik Airport (Evenes) or Svolvær (SVJ) for direct access to this iconic archipelago.

🏡 Once you've landed, you can settle into your accommodation.

  • The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) manages a network of cozy huts in the mountains, accessible by ski routes.
  • These DNT huts are affordable and perfect for a ski tour, but make sure to book in advance, especially during peak season. You can find availability on the DNT website or via their app (iOS | Android).
  • For more options, check out guesthouses, lodges, or even Airbnb

🚗 To get around, Norway's public transportation is reliable and convenient for reaching many ski areas.

  • Use the Entur app to find routes, schedules, and tickets for trains and buses.
  • If you prefer flexibility, consider renting a car from companies like Hertz, Avis, or Sixt all of which include winter tires for the snowy conditions.
