A quick guide on ๐Ÿง—โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Aussie rock climbing

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia is an incredibly vast and diverse country and there is a great deal of rock waiting to be climbed.

The climbing here is mostly sport-climbing and bouldering, and it just so good that you'll probably live some of the your best cragging experiences here. ๐Ÿ˜

Make sure to check the local climbing grading scale and the type of bolts used on the routes. ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

Rock climbing in Australia: ๐Ÿ”Ž Overview

Australia is a huge country with lots of rock climbing opportunities. Most of the climbing is sport or trad single pitches and bouldering. Yes, it misses some of the "alpine" feeling (with some exceptions ๐Ÿ˜‰), but for sure you can experience both adventurous or more laid back, chill climbing.

Here is a selection of the best climbing spots in Australia: ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

1๏ธโƒฃ Frogg Buttress: 1.5h from Brisbane. Climb on orange-streaked rhyolite. 400 single-pitch trad routes from 5a to 7c. Head here for quality crack climbing. Visit in spring or fall.

2๏ธโƒฃ Blue Mountains: 2h west of Sydney. Over 6,000 routes on sandstone rock ranging from adventurous big walls, single-pitch sport and trad. Grades range from 5 to 8a. Climbing is possible year-round.

3๏ธโƒฃ Nowra: 1.5h south of Sydney. Over 1,300 single-pitch, sport-climbing routes with short approaches ๐Ÿ˜. Most of the routes are graded 6b up. Bring your pads as thereโ€™s excellent bouldering nearby.

4๏ธโƒฃ Point Perpendicular: 2.15h south of Sydney. Incredible place for exposed single-pitch, sea-cliff climbing. The routes here are mostly trad, and you need to rappel down to reach the crag. Some routes are bolted with "Aussie Carrots" (see more below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ).

5๏ธโƒฃ Mount Arapiles: 4h from Melbourne. It is a word-famous sublime 140m tall quartzite cliff. Youโ€™ll find over 3,200 trad routes grading from 3 to 7b with easy approaches ๐Ÿ˜. Visit in spring or fall.

6๏ธโƒฃ The Grampians: 3.5h from Melbourne. This is a world-class famous climbing spot. There are more than 9,000 routes on sandstone rock. It is mostly sport climbing and bouldering grading from 3 to 9a+. Make sure to check local restrictions.

7๏ธโƒฃ Tasmania: this magical wild place is home to the continent's only real mountaineering. Many mention that there might be more climbable rock in Tasmania than on the rest of the continent. Here you can find amazing sandstone, seaside granite, and columnar basalt rock. The main climbing hubspots to remember are Mount Wellington, Freycinet National Park, Tasman Peninsula (including Totem Pole and Mount Brown), Frenchmanโ€™s Cap.

The "Aussie Carrots"

While you can find ring bolts, fixed hangers and U bolts all around the world, carrots are a local specialty. ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

Carrots are machine bolts with a hexagonal head. To clip carrots you'll need removable bolt plates (or a nut in case of emergency ๐Ÿ˜…) and not all of the quickdraws can be used.

Only use quickdraws with a solid gate carabiner. Otherwise the bolt plate won't lock onto the carrot. Read more on the Aussie Carrots here. Check the video below to see how this works. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

Mapo Tapo's record month ๐Ÿ’Œ๐Ÿš€

June was a record month for Mapo Tapo: hundreds of travelers booked their second, third, or even fourth Mapo Tapo trip.

How did that happen? Here is @Dani telling you all about it ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

As we often do, we decided to run an experiment. We reached out to the thousands of travelers who had already traveled with us, offering them a 10% discount code ๐ŸŽ as a gift for the trust they have put in us and continue to give us.

This initiative was so successful that we thought, why not offer the same incentive to those who haven't had the chance to travel with us yet?

And hereโ€™s your gift that will hopefully lower the barrier to give us a chance: use the code  DISCOVERMAPOTAPO  to get a 10% discount on your next climbing, trekking, mountaineering, or via ferrata trip, valid for all departures listed for 2024 and 2025, until July 21st, at midnight โณ.

Got questions? Hit reply or WhatsApp us anytime ๐Ÿ“ฒ.

Enjoy July's promotion and give Mapo Tapo the chance to change your idea of vacation ๐Ÿ˜Š
