Trek Stories: A Journey to the Top of Lobuche East π³π΅ |
In todayβs Trek Stories, weβre heading the highest Mapo Tapo has ever gone β literally! ποΈ At 6,119 meters, Sarah and the crew summited Lobuche East after trekking through the legendary Everest Base Camp route. π€―
From a surprise birthday cake flown in by helicopter to golden sunrises above the clouds, this trek was packed with unforgettable moments. Sarah shares how they prepared, what made the summit special, and why Nepal might be calling them back for 7,000 meters next. π€« Letβs get into it! π₯Ύ

The incredible views π
|
πͺ How did you prepare physically and mentally for this challenging trek? |
πββοΈ"For all the group, we practice a lot of mountains sports during all the year, skiing in winter and hiking, cycling, climbing, running in summer so we were physically prepared for this kind of expedition! And we all live in French alps so we have a great playground in high mountains to train!" π
|
π€© Can you share a memorable moment or challenge you faced during the trek that stood out to you? |
"A really good moment was the day before the ascent: it was the birthday of one of the guys and with the help of the guides we had the chance to eat a really good cake at 5300m elevation. π₯³ This cake came with the helicopter so it was a crazy moment with all the team to celebrate this day (tasty moment after eating rice during the last 10 days π
)."
π In the Everest region, there are no roads past Lukla β so everything must be carried by yaks, porters, or flown in by helicopter. (But having the cake flown in is something really special π)
|
π Can you describe the feeling of reaching Lobuche East summit after the long trek? |
β π "At the summit we were all proud of ourselves! It was an amazing sunrise during the way up with a beautiful sea of clouds and we were so lucky with the weather! All theses good conditions with a good team made this moment very special and I will never forget that feeling on the top!" π
π From Lobuche East (6,119m), trekkers get one of the best panoramic views in the Khumbu: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, and more. It's one of the few trekking peaks with such dramatic exposure.
|
π» How did the high altitude affect you, and how did you cope with it? |
β π³ "The altitude affected everyone (at least at one moment) event though we were used to climbing at high altitude in Mont Blanc area in French Alps. But the schedule of the guide is really good to have the best acclimatisation to reach 6000 m! We took our time, drank a lot of water and followed advices of the guide and we made it! ππΌ"
π₯΄ Even the fittest trekkers can feel the effects of altitude. It can start as low as 2,500m, and about 75% of people experience symptoms above 3,500m β slow acclimatisation and hydration are key.
|
π What role did your guides and fellow trekkers play in your experience? |
π₯° "The guides we had were amazing! They gave us a lot of good advice and stories on the Nepal history."
π Sherpa guides are renowned for their exceptional mountaineering skills. Many have summited Mount Everest multiple times, showcasing their unparalleled expertise in high-altitude climbing.
|
They made it to the top!! π
|
π€ Would you do it again, or recommend it to others? Why or why not? |
"Yes we were all agree to say that we will return in Nepal and maybe try a 7000 m peak now. ππ«£"
