Mapo Tapo: What It’s Really Like to Climb & Sail in Croatia 🧗‍♀️⛵️

Mapo Tapo Newsletter #35

🧗‍♀️ Crags, Kayaks & Coastlines: Climb Croatia by Sailboat 🇭🇷

🧗‍♀️ Some trips are epic because of the climbs. Others, because of the setting. This one? It’s both—and it floats. 🤯

⛵️ Imagine waking up on a sailboat, paddling your kayak to hidden crags, then clipping into limestone that rises straight from the sea. This is not your average climbing trip. This is Croatia, by way of water.

Your home for one week😉

⛵️ A Floating Home, a New Crag Every Day

😍 For seven days, your home is a 12-meter sailboat, equipped with cozy cabins, a shared bathroom, and a kitchen ready for communal meals. You live on the boat the whole week—no packing, no commuting. Climbing shoes dry in the sun, dinners happen on deck, and you fall asleep in peaceful bays under starry skies. 🌌

🛶  Each morning, you kayak from the boat to a different crag, guided by someone who knows every bolt. Literally—because your local guide, Icio, bolted many of them himself.

💪 He’s a seasoned Italian climber who has spent years developing this area and leading trips from his own boat. This is his backyard, and he knows it like the back of his (chalky) hand😉.

💬 Want to hear what it’s like from climbers who’ve been there? Check out the reviews—real stories, real stoke.

This place looks magical!! 😍

🧗‍♂️ Croatia's Coastal Climbing Scene Is Seriously Underrated

💡 The Dalmatian coast is a limestone playground, with over 1,000 islands scattered along its length. Crags range from beginner-friendly slabs to steep overhangs that test even seasoned crushers. You’ll explore gems like:

  • 🧗 Cliffbase (Hvar Island) – a private climbing haven with more than 100 bolted routes, right above the water, all set by its passionate owner.
  • 🧗 Vis Island – once a Yugoslav military base, now one of the most peaceful and wild spots for climbing in the Adriatic.
  • 🧗 Secluded bays and secret sectors that only locals—and your guide—know about 😎.

☝ Bonus: Croatia is built for this kind of trip. Calm bays make for perfect overnight anchoring, and many of the crags are only accessible by sea. You’ll have entire walls to yourself—no crowds, no queues, just limestone and ocean breeze🌊.

💬 Just be warned: after a week on the boat, the land might feel like it’s swaying when you step off 😅.

Can't wait to be back out there! 🧗‍♀️

🛶 Chill, Climb, Repeat

😌 This trip is for climbers who want more than just routes. It’s for those who want to feel the rock, the wind, the salt spray—and disconnect from it all. Check this vlog to get the vibe of this trip🏄‍♀️

🥰 One of our past travellers shared: "The mood is super chill—you go climb, then eat on the boat or at a cool restaurant." The trip balances adventure with relaxation, offering time to swim, paddleboard, or simply bask in the sun🌞.

💡 Want a shot of adrenaline? Croatia is a sleeper paradise for Deep Water Soloing (DWS). The limestone cliffs around spots like Vela Stiniva Bay and Hvar Island rise straight from the sea, with clean falls and lines from 5a to 8a+—perfect for testing your limits without a rope (and with a splashy landing).

🌊 Even if you’ve never tried DWS before, it’s the ideal place to start. Warm water, zero pressure, and all the stoke.

This is Cliffbase (Hvar Island )🌊

🍷 Climbing Culture Meets Coastal Flavor

🌊 This trip isn’t just about climbing—it’s about living the Adriatic way. Croatia’s islands are steeped in history, from ancient Greek settlements to Venetian stone villages, and every bay you anchor in has a story to tell.

🍇 When you’re not on the rock or in the water, you’ll wander cobblestone streets, sip espresso in sunlit squares, and toast the day with local wines and homemade rakija.

🐙 The food? Fresh, simple, and straight from the sea—octopus peka, grilled sardines, truffle pasta, and olive oil that tastes like sunshine.

🧘‍♀️ You’re not just here to climb—you’re here to soak in the rhythm of island life. It’s slow, salty, and satisfying in all the right ways.

Lunch on a sailboat anyone?  🎣
