Touring Tales: Deep Powder Days in the Lyngen Alps π³π΄ |
In today's Touring Tales we follow Antonioβs ski touring adventure in Norwayβs remote Lyngen Alpsβa trip filled with deep powder, 100 km/h winds, glacier ascents, and tough mountain decisions.
He shares what itβs like to face avalanche conditions head-on, why fat skis are a must, and the thrill of dropping into a 45-degree, all-powder slope straight from the ridge with fjords stretching out below. Let's dive in! πΏ
|
π How would you describe the Lyngen Alps to someone whoβs never been, and what should first-time visitors keep in mind? |
"Well I'd sum it up as: "Skiing on a glacier with sea views". Yes there are glaciers at 1000m of altitude in Lyngen, maybe less. Do not expect social life, restaurants, bars or other stuff. Lyngen Alps are for people who ONLY want to ski the best powder βοΈ and in one of the coolest places on earth. However, I think there is a place putting music after 10pm in Lyngseidet."
π Lyngenβs unique geography allows ski tourers to start skinning from near sea level and reach glaciated terrain within hoursβsomething thatβs almost impossible anywhere else in Europe.

πͺ Was there a moment on the mountain that really tested you? How did you push through it? |
"On the last day there was high avalanche risk (4) π³ since it snowed so much the previous days. We were expecting not to ski on that day, but our certified guide pulled a very safe tour out of the hat, and we went for it. Great! The weather was fine until we went to the opposite face of the mountain we were climbing and that's when the wind started. To reach the summit and ski down from it we took off the skis, put them on our backpacks and started going up with the crampons. However, the wind started to mount more and more. At a certain point, I believe it was blowing at 100 km/h or more. π¨ We were on a ridge, pretty exposed on one side. The wind was making all of us loose balance. But we were 50m from the summit. Me and the rest of the guys were pumped to go up, but Fabrizio, our guide, assessed the situation a made the whole group turn back and ski down. That was pretty intense, but also fun in its own way. πThanks Fabri for the good call! π"

β· Can you describe the most unforgettable moments from the trip? |
"On the second day. It was the sunniest day of the week. βοΈ Perfect Norwegian Powder from the night before. I was standing on top of Tafeltinden 1395m with my friends with a perfect view of the fjord on one side and the glacier on the other. The ideal moment leading to the descent of the best powder of the week. βοΈ I'd go back to the first day when we dropped a 45-degree all-powder slope right off the summit ridge. What a ride!!! β·"
|
π€ What kind of preparation went into this trip, and is there anything youβd do differently next time? |
"Well I didn't really train for it. I'm used to ski the whole season.π Also, do not expect too much elevation gain in Lyngen Alps (between 800m-1400m). Actually, if you ski during the season, do not train too much before the trip. You might risk of getting injured."
|
πΏ Whatβs one piece of gear that proved absolutely essential during the tour? |
"Fat skis, of course. πββοΈ This year was one of the snowiest years π¨ in Lyngen Alps. Please don't go there with you K2 Wayback 88. π You'll miss out on some real fun."
πΏ Wider skis (100mm+) help maintain float, reduce fatigue, and offer better control in deep, low-density Arctic powder.
If Antonio inspired you for next year ππ
