WoodWatch: Why we started planting trees 🌳

Hi! Jonay here, CEO of WoodWatch.

There’s something we’ve been doing at WoodWatch for more than a decade that I don’t think I talk about enough. Planting trees.

We planted our first trees back in 2013. At the time, the idea was actually quite simple. We make watches from wood. Nature gives us the material that makes our products possible, so we felt we had a responsibility to give something back.

That’s where it started.

One watch sold. One tree planted.

But over the years, I’ve learned that the impact of planting a tree can go much further than replacing the wood we use. Together with Trees for the Future, we support their Forest Garden Program in countries including Senegal, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

And this is where the story became much bigger for me. Because these aren't simply trees being planted somewhere on a map. They can help farmers restore exhausted soil. They can help families grow their own food and build a more reliable income. They create habitats, restore biodiversity and remove carbon from the atmosphere.

A tree can become part of a family's future.

And when you see it that way, one tree suddenly doesn't feel so small anymore. Over the years, we kept planting. One watch at a time. One tree at a time. And today, together with all of you, we've planted more than 575,000 trees. 🌳

I sometimes have to stop for a second when I see that number. 575,000. When we started in 2013, I don't think I could have imagined we would ever get here.

But we're not finished. We've set ourselves a new goal:

700,000 trees planted by the end of 2027.

That means we still have more than 125,000 trees ahead of us. It’s ambitious. But when I look back at where we started, that’s also what makes me excited about it. Because 575,000 trees didn't appear overnight. It happened tree by tree, watch by watch, year after year. And that's exactly how we'll get to 700,000. There’s a quote I’ve always liked:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Thank you for helping us get this far. If you own a WoodWatch, you helped us plant a tree. And I think that's something pretty special.
