Today, on the occasion of International Dance Day, we celebrate Misty Copeland, the first African American ballerina to be promoted to étoile at the American Ballet Theatre, and her epic tale of self-determination and indomitable talent.
Her youth was marked by economic and personal difficulties; growing up in a dingy motel room with her siblings, she fought daily for a space on the floor to sleep.
However, at thirteen, Misty discovered classical dance, and with fierce dedication and natural talent, she climbed to the heights of the ballet world, becoming the first African American ballerina named étoile.
The stage is the world, and Misty Copeland has shown us that, with the right mix of passion and perseverance, every movement can be a statement of strength and beauty.
