Discovering Mallorca ๐ ๐ช๐ธ your ultimate guide to the destination and its best outdoor experiences
Mallorca is a sun-kissed paradise with over 300 days of sunshine annually. This island is not just the perfect place for beach lounging but offers hundreds of outdoor sports adventures.
๐งโโ๏ธ Climbing and deep water soloing
The Mallorca climbing scene became notorious in 2005 when Chris Sharma pioneered the Deep Water Solo (DWS) route of Es Pontas, speculated to be graded at 9a+ that only counts two repetitions as of 2024.
That looks quite hard. But donโt worry, Mallorca offers something for every climber. Most of the climbing consists of single-pitch routes, with an abundance of both easy and harder climbs.
From slabby walls overhangs to juggy tufas, roofs, and cracks. Mallorca really is a climbing dream island!
Sa gubia (Southwest): It is Mallorcaโs largest crag and offer numerous multi-pitch options as well.
Fraguel (Southwest): know for its concentration of high-quality difficult routes.
La Creveta (Northwest): located near Mallorcaโs tallest mountain range.
Eastern Mallorca: Although this side of the island it is the main hub for Deep Water Soloing, with many of its prime spots located in idyllic bays.
๐ Tips for climbing and traveling to Mallorca
๐ธ Travel in spring. Nice temperatures and dry conditions, this is the prime climbing season. Summer is too hot and Autumn bring storms and tourists.
๐งโโ๏ธBringing a 60m rope is essential, a 70m rope is even better. Also bring 16 to 18 quickdraws.
๐ Spend at least 4 days in Mallorca if you want to practice outdoor sports
๐ Careful to car rentals, they can ask deposits up to โฌ1000
Other tha Google Maps you can use MobiPalma app for checking the islandโs public transportation
๐ If you are traveling from outside Europe bring F plugs to recharge your devices.
๐ธ Cash is king. Lots of small local business only accept cash. Make sure to bring some!
๐ฅพ Not only climbing. Hiking in Mallorca
Mallorca also offers a significant mountain range with over 5 peaks rising above 1,000 meters. The Serra de Tramuntana range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it stretches along the northwest coast, making Mallorca the perfect place for hikers.
You can hike in Mallorca all year-round. However, make sure to avoid intense heat in July and August.
Distance: 13 kilometers round trip, the trail is well-marked but traverses rugged and rocky terrain.
Estimated time: 5-7h
๐ช GR221 or โLa Ruta de Pedra en Secโ:
For hikers with advanced experience
Intense fitness level
Elevation gain: 3000 meters
Distance: approximately 140 kilometers from end to end.
Estimated Time: 8-10 days. However, you can decide to only hike parts of the trail instead of the whole one.
๐ฐ Costs and budgeting
Here is a little breakdown of what could be the costs of traveling to Mallorca for 4-days for climbing or hiking:
๐ Accommodation: โฌ35-โฌ100 per night.
๐ Transportation: including a rental car for the entire duration at approximately โฌ200 plus an estimated โฌ100 for fuel.
๐ถ Boat rental for Deep Water Soloing: the cost for 2 days rental is โฌ300-โฌ400
๐งโโ๏ธ Climbing guide and gear hire: For those needing guidance or equipment, hiring a local rock-climbing instructor for four days can cost between โฌ400-โฌ600, while renting sport-climbing gear for three days may add โฌ90-โฌ150 to your budget.
the Mapo Tapo website was super slow. 40 seconds to load a page ๐คฏ๐ฅถ
the user experience on the website was weird and confused ๐ฅด
our travelers and guides were not able to manage their trips on their personal area ๐
That is when we decided to build a new platform from scratch. Not an easy job and we could not have done it without our CTO & tech wizard, @Alfre.๐งโโ๏ธ
Three months after, we launched the new platform in December 2023 and @Alfre ๐งโโ๏ธ is ready to bet that you will not find a single page loading in more than 1 second ๐คฉ.
Moreover, the website experience is super simple. If you want to book a trip you can get to checkout in 3 clicks:
๐ Bonus: you can also see all departures in a calendar view
Even though the new platform is super cool, we still have a long way to go and we will keep you posted about new features in the next newsletters!
