Rock climbing in Jordan: ๐ Overview |
Nomadic Bedouins have been scrambling the sandstone peaks of Wadi Rum for centuries. Around 1984, Tony Howard and a group of English climbers arrived and began to develop hundreds of new traditional routes to complement the numerous โBedouin roads'.
|
Sabbah Atieq was one of the original guides for Tony Howardโs early explorations. Two of his sons, Mโsallam and Sulieman, operate a rustic desert camp and welcome climbers to stay with them in the village. Sulieman will be your host and guide during the Mapo Tapo trip Jordan - The Authentic.
|
๐ There are more than 600 routes in Jordan - 250+ just in Wadi Rum. The rock is prevalently sandstone and the majority of routes are multi-pitch and trad climbing routes, with only a few exceptions that use bolts.
- 82% of all routes a Trad and require your own gear placement.
- 18% of all routes are Sport and are bolted.
โ
Although routes require experience with gear placement and rope management, the climbing is really accessible to all levels. Most of the routes are in the 4th a 5th grade. ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
|
๐ The best areas for climbing in Jordan are: Wadi rum; Ajloun; Madaba; Amman; Tafilah; Irbid; Petra.
๐
If you are planning a visit, the best period is in Autumn. Spring works too. โ ๏ธ Avoid Summer and Winter.
๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด PS. If you're wondering about travel safety, Jordan is a fairly Safe country. There is a stable government and they welcome all tourists in the country ensuring their safety. Check your government's travel website to see the latest updates

Intermediate routes, with >5 pitches, and longer approach:
โญ๏ธ Super classic route, not to miss โก๏ธ The Pillar of Wisdom (6b) is a classic 11-pitch route (400m) not to be missed. All pitches except the last one grade in the range 4 to 5+. The last pitch, the crux, is the only 6b. At last, there is a mind-bending descent that is nearly impossible to on-sight without a hand-drawn map from someone whoโs done it before.
